Employees at South Korea’s most popular chat app operator Kakao Corp. enjoyed the most generous pay raise of 35 percent on year last year, with average salary per worker topping 100 million won ($89,000).
Employees working at 23 out of the country’s 30 biggest listed companies based on market cap received an average of 92.9 million won in salary in 2020, up 5.8 percent from the previous year, showed data compiled by job search engine Job Korea on Monday.
Kakao employees enjoyed the biggest pay increase. Their average pay jumped 35.0 percent on year to 108 million won. Kakao is the operator of Kakao Talk, a chat app that almost all Koreans use, and other mobile platform services including e-commerce and taxi hailing.
Game developer NCSoft Corp. was the second most generous employer after raising the average pay by 22.1 percent. Its employees were paid 105.5 million won on average.
Internet giant Naver Corp. paid out 102.5 million won in salary on average last year, up 21.2 percent on year.
Employees at five other big companies also saw more than a 10 percent increase in pay. Average worker pay at Samsung Electronics rose 17.6 percent, at Samsung Life Insurance 13.8 percent, Samsung Electro-Mechanics 12.8 percent, Celltrion 11.6 percent and Samsung Biologics 10.7 percent.
Pay raise, however, differed by gender. Male workers at the 23 companies received an average 101 million won in salary, up 5.8 percent compared to a year earlier, while female workers were paid 71.8 million won on average, up 5.5 percent on year.
Kakao gave the most handsome pay raise to its male workers, paid 132 million won on average, up 43.5 percent on year. The average pay for female workers at Kakao, meanwhile, rose 16.1 percent to 72 million won.
Male workers at NCSoft saw an average pay raise of 21.5 percent, Naver 19.6 percent, Samsung Electronics 17.2 percent, Samsung Life Insurance 15.2 percent, Samsung Electro-Mechanics 13.3 percent, Celltrion 12.5 percent.
Average pay exceeded 100 million won for male workers also at NCSoft (118.1 million won), Naver (108.9 million won), Samsung Electronics (136 million won) and Samsung Life Insurance (129 million won).
Naver topped the list in giving the biggest pay raise to its female workers, paying out 25 percent more than a year ago. Naver’s female employees earned 91.1 million won in salary on average.
Female workers at NCSoft saw an average pay raise of 24.7 percent, Samsung Electronics 18.1 percent, Samsung Life Insurance 14.1 percent, Celltrion 12.5 percent, and Samsung Biologics 12.1 percent.
